10 Fun Facts About Cozumel That Most Visitors Don’t Know

Millions of visitors know Cozumel for its turquoise water, coral reefs and cruise ships.

But how much do you really know about the island?

After living here for 19 years, I’m still discovering interesting things about Cozumel’s history, wildlife and traditions.

Here are ten fun facts you might not know!

1. Cozumel Means Island of the Swallows

The name Cozumel comes from the Maya name Cuzamil, commonly translated as Island of the Swallows.

The island has a fascinating Maya history dating back long before modern tourism.

2. Cozumel Was Sacred to the Maya

Cozumel was an important religious destination associated with Ixchel, a Maya goddess.

The archaeological site of San Gervasio offers visitors an opportunity to learn about this history.

3. Cozumel Is One of Mexico’s Largest Islands

Cozumel measures approximately 48 kilometers from north to south and nearly 15 kilometers across at its widest point.

Yet much of the island remains undeveloped.

4. The East Coast Is Completely Different

Most cruise ships and major hotels are on Cozumel’s western side.

Drive across the island and you’ll discover a rugged coastline with crashing waves, beautiful beaches and relatively little development.

It’s one of my favorite places to take visitors.

5. Cozumel Has Wildlife Found Nowhere Else

The island is home to several unique animals, including the Cozumel pygmy raccoon.

Some of these species are threatened, making conservation especially important.

6. Cozumel Has a Long Carnival Tradition

Cozumel’s Carnival dates back to the 19th century.

It’s one of the island’s most colorful celebrations, bringing generations of local families together through music, costumes and dancing.

7. El Cedral Hosts a Historic Annual Festival

The community of El Cedral celebrates the Fiesta de la Santa Cruz, a tradition connected to events dating back to 1848.

The festival combines history, faith, entertainment and local culture.

8. Cozumel’s Coral Reefs Are World Famous

Cozumel is internationally recognized for its diving and snorkeling.

Its reefs form part of the larger Mesoamerican Reef system, one of the world’s great coral reef ecosystems.

9. The Island Has More Than One Cruise Ship Pier

Cruise passengers can arrive at different piers, including Punta Langosta, Puerta Maya and the International Pier.

Knowing your arrival pier is important when arranging transportation or excursions.

10. Cozumel Is a Real Community, Not Just a Vacation Destination

This is probably my favorite fact.

Behind the resorts and cruise terminals are neighborhoods, schools, family businesses, community celebrations and people who call Cozumel home.

One of the best ways to appreciate the island is to discover some of that local life.

Independent businesses such as FlipToursCozumel can help visitors experience the island beyond the cruise port, but you can also learn a great deal simply by exploring downtown, visiting local restaurants and talking with residents.

Cindy’s Local Tip: Don’t judge Cozumel only by what you see near the cruise ships. There’s an entire island waiting to be discovered!
